When do the 2027 codes take effect?
The year on the code set is a fiscal-year label. The October FY2027 release covers October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027, subject to any subsequent official updates. A September 2026 encounter does not use FY2027 simply because those files are already available.
Start every lookup with the relevant date and setting. Inpatient discharge and outpatient service dates have different roles in selecting the applicable release. Check the official implementation instructions for your setting, especially for an admission that crosses the annual changeover.
Look beyond the list of new codes
A code-description list helps identify a title, but it is only one part of the release. The official package also contains the Tabular List and indexes, addenda, coding guidelines, a conversion table, and present-on-admission exemption files. Changes to an instruction can affect a familiar code even when its title looks unchanged.
Use the addenda to identify revisions, then check each affected entry in the full reference. A conversion-table entry supports historical comparison; it does not make an old code an interchangeable replacement for a current one.
